How to portray a King

March 11, 2018

…because “How to shoot a King” sounded a little bit too violent. ūüėČ

Well, all you need is a winter with some snow, a beautiful forest and a model who is willing to get up too early, to freeze, get wet feet and able to make his way through bushes of thorns with his sword! At least this is what I imagined for a shoot like this. Of course you also need to deal with some loss which will probably come along with such adventurous plans – equipment falling into the snow, things covered in dirt and even can’t be found ever again (by me). Despite all those difficulties the pictures were definitely worth all the effort and losses. And Stefan did a very good job there despite the bad conditions, we both are very excited about the outcome of that shoot!

Stefan and I took photos together already several times, he also was the male model for my series “Papergirl & Plasticboy” that I took for an exhibition, so I knew¬†this would work out just as fine! After Stefan has sent me his suggestions for what to wear I tried to match the props we would need for a king or warrior in the woods, with a touch of fashion. So I just bought a sword and started various attempts of making a crown that would have more of a fashion or even avantgarde look and would match Stefan’s outfit. Then we added some black shag as a royal scarf – and there was the king himself! ūüėÄ

If you are curious about the light setup – I used two off-camera flashes, one of them with an umbrella, the other one from behind without any light diffusion. Here’s a funny behind-the-scenes-shot, and another photo without any added lights in comparison, which is just boring in my opinion. That’s what it looked like for the jogger that came around during the shoot, so – nothing special, just a man with a sword out in the woods…

After our feet were wet enough Stefan changed into a hoodie and we took some photos which are more of a fashion style than portrait or commercial like the ones before, but I love these so much too, especially Stefan’s posing is awesome – of course, as he has been working as a fashion (and commercial) model a lot, so working with an experienced model is invaluable!

Roman Straka

February 7, 2018

In 2009 I have watched “Krawutzi Kaputzi” here in Vienna, a very funny show, similar to the musical “Avenue Q”, where the singers are puppeteers on the stage at the same time – everyone there did an awesome job! ¬†One of the singers was Roman Straka, playing “Fips” and now, 8 years later, I had the pleasure to take portraits for him! On the other hand, Roman was also part of the cast of another “Simpl”-show (both directed by Werner Sobotka): “Und tsch√ľ√ü – das war der ORF” where I was shooting the official pictures for the programme.

Besides being an actor, Roman is teaching elocution at the PCA, as he always has loved to practice speaking to become a radio presenter, voice-over or dubbing artist since he was a child! If you want to see him on stage – he will be playing in Gmunden in March and April. On March 22nd will be the Premiere of the musical “Jane Eyre”, where Roman plays alongside Elisabeth Sikora, Yngve Gasoy-Romdal, Carin Filipńćińá and Leah Delos Santos, directed by Markus Olzinger. And I am already looking forward to watch the show, as I have also loved “Blutsbr√ľder” some years ago! If you want to know more about “Musical Fr√ľhling Gmunden”, please click HERE, I can absolutely recommend it.

What I love about especially photographing actors is the complete change of a character with just a different look on their face, even with only slightly different styling. Of course lighting and color are helping too, but it is always astounding to be there with a suddenly different person! That’s always the most exciting part for me – how different someone can look during the time of shooting. I’ll show you what I’m talking about. ūüėČ From nice and sweet to creepy can happen in minutes!

Of course this is exactly what actors need for castings, auditions and their agents – being able to show what kind of characters they are able to play. From funny guy to creepy neighbor to loving family father.

I hope Roman will get awesome jobs through the pictures we took. Here’s the slideshow with more of his photos!

Charles Kreische

November 16, 2017

So far I’ve photographed six awesome singers playing “Alfred”¬†through the years, but I noticed that there was only one “Herbert” as far as I know of my customers careers! ¬†So I was very happy that I had the honor to also meet and portray the reigning “Herbert” of this years production of “Tanz der Vampire” ¬†– Charles Kreische, a handsome, very young singer/actor who has just finished his training at the Joop van den Ende Academy in Hamburg.

I got to know him as a very polite, kind person, so it was easy to get along really well. Although this has been his first personal photoshoot, he did a very good job and I enjoyed that afternoon very much.

I absolutely have to watch the show when there’s finally some time left, as I am curious now to see him on stage too! If you want to know more about Charlie, please also visit his facebook-page,¬†where you can even watch a video of his transformation to a beautiful blonde vampire.

As it was getting colder and colder outside I simply took my studio-equippment with me to the Ronacher, although I also shot many photos there with natural light only. We thankfully got permission to use this awesome building as a shooting location, because we both love those gray structured concrete walls, and even took some pictures outside at the roof-terrace.

Shooting on location is also much more interesting for me as a photographer than working in a studio – finding solutions for different light situations, exploring the city or using structured or painted walls in flats or houses is so much more fun!

And here are more of my favorite pictures of that day – enjoy! ūüôā

Richard Panzenböck

September 10, 2016

Richard and I have definitely taken a lot of photos together so far – and I enjoyed every single time, as he is one of the most relaxed and funniest people I know! ūüôā

I have no idea how he manages all the different things/jobs he’s doing all the time: Acting, costume designing – and especially being a very busy, successful puppeteer with his own show “Paperman” after winning the 2nd prize in RTL’s “Die Puppenstars”.

Richard is¬†a very good looking “vampire” (Martina Bruckner-N√∂hrer: Thanks for the phantastic make-up!) and I would have loved to watch a movie like “Twilight” with him even more. ūüôā

Some years ago Richard helped me with one of my projects called “Papergirl & Plasticboy” (Everything except my two models was either plastic or paper! Hair & Make-up again by Martina Bruckner-N√∂hrer) during a workshop about fashion photography and an exhibition – the clothes ¬†Birgit and Stefan are wearing are all made out of paper and plastic, designed by Richard – I think he did an awesome job here as well, so thanks again! ūüôā Here’s the last (wedding) photo of this series:

This summer we took some portraits outdoor in a rather quick¬†shooting, here’s one of my favourites of that day, more in the slideshow below!

Aris Sas – once again

September 23, 2015

… and hopefully again and again. ūüôā

On Sept. 19th I have not only been at the Raimundtheater to take some pictures at the “Musicalfest” (photos are available in my new shop), but also had the pleasure to meet one of my favourite actors once again for taking his new headshots, as he changed his look significantly.

In case you are visiting my blog regularly, you’ll know that we already have had several portrait-shoots together and that I enjoyed it a lot! ūüôā Look at¬†more photos of Aris here and here¬†too.

Actually we planned on taking the new headshots in front of¬†Vienna’s townhall, but unfortunately the “Rathausplatz”¬†was not accessible at all due to the Vienna Masters-Event and horses everywhere… so we had to find another place very fast, but nevertheless got some nice pictures, have a look yourself!

Martin Zauner

August 12, 2013

The next day I had the pleasure to take photos of actor Martin Zauner. He is really nice, interesting to talk to, and at the moment you can watch him play in “Cop Stories” every Tuesday on ORF. Martin is also part of the Ensemble in the “Theater in der Josefstadt”.

Martin wanted to take his portraits at the T√ľrkenschanzpark. Still too hot that day‚Ķ so we walked through this really beautiful park – I admit that I haven’t been there before‚Ķtoo‚Ķ I really¬† should know that town much better!

As green trees / grass is not always the most flattering surroundings for portraits we tried to find some different backgrounds too, which was kind of hard as it wasn’t as shady as I would have loved, but Martin stayed patient and walked regardless of the heat through the park with me, where we also used the floor as photo-background. ūüôā
