Antje Kohler: Because it’s Christmas

November 6, 2016

bildschirmfoto-2016-11-06-um-18-49-14
I already know Antje Kohler since 2014 – back then I took her new portraits, in case you want to have a look at those photos, HERE’s the link to the old blogpost. This year Antje asked me to take photos for her first solo CD: “Because it’s Christmas”. Funny thing to shoot a cover for a Christmas-CD on one of the hottest days in July. ūüôā

By the way – if you want to listen to some music on this CD, here’s the chance to do so – my favorite on this CD¬†is¬†“Winter Song”,¬†haven’t heard it before and just love that song!

img_1081bAntje told me that she had – because of her job as a singer – to spend many Christmases without her husband in hotels,…, so one day she bought a little Christmas tree for those¬†occacions, that’s the story behind – why there should be this¬†little Christmas tree involved on the CD-cover and the booklet, that’s why we tried to find different places for Antje and her Christmas tree, even on the toilet/bathroom.¬†ūüėČ

Antje got permission to shoot her CD-cover at the beautiful Palais Nieder√∂sterreich – thanks again! It’s an awesome location, nevertheless we decided to shoot in one of the modern parts downstairs, because it reminded me a lot of a hotel lobby and had a rather cold feeling because of the stone floor, that’s why I thought it works perfectly well with Antje’s story, and that’s why I also liked the colder version of the chosen photo for the cover, although I decided to “switch on the lights” later in photoshop. ūüėČ

At the beginning of the blogpost you can find the final cover, editing by Bernhard Poppe.

btsNow more about the shoot! Fortunately Antje chose a photo where I also took my only “behind the scenes”-picture of this shoot, because I knew that I would want to write a blogpost about it later. So here it is for the photographers among you. I used a big Octabox as single light source on the right handside of the camera with an elinchrom flashlight (500 Ws), tilted down very much, which explains the lighter¬†spot/circle on the floor and a bit of a icy/mirror-effect on the blue-ish photo above, which can unfortunately not be seen on the finished CD-cover. And of course some (very few) light was coming from the window behind/above the couch, although of course the flashlight was overpowering most of it.¬†I was practically lying on the floor with my camera, so I shot from a very low angle (not like in the bts-photo on the left handside).

Well, I hope you enjoy the slideshow (at the end of this post) and of course also Antje’s music! If you want to hear Antje live and in person – the CD-presentation will be on Dec. 5th, 2016 at the Theater am Spittelberg in Vienna, more information about this event and ordering the CD can be found on Antje’s website. Merry Christmas! ūüėÄ

Last week I had the pleasure getting to know actress Iris Nussbaum, a lovely young, beautiful girl who has finished studying at the Schauspielschule Krauss this year, so I enjoyed taking her portraits a lot and I hope they will help her finding great jobs on TV or in movies!

During a shoot there’s always that one special moment where everything turns out to be perfect, and I just love these exciting minutes! In this case:

Sandra Maria Miklautz

Sandra Maria Miklautz

I first saw Sandra on stage in 2001, when she was still studying at the Performing Center Austria. “Magic to do” was a great show, directed and choreographed by the phantastic Alonso Barros. Later that year Sandra played in “Crazy Love”, a very cute new (in 2001) musical at the Wiener Metropol. Since then she has worked for the Vereinigte B√ľhnen Wien, did¬†a lot of freelance work and is also teaching dance-classes. In case you have seen “Das Orangenm√§dchen” – a beautiful little¬†musical at the Off-Stage theatre in 2008/2009, based on the book of Jostein Garder, Sandra¬†played the title role.

Sandra Maria Miklautz

And now, finally – 15 years later after getting to know her – I had the pleasure to take¬†Sandra’s portraits! ūüôā Such a beautiful face!¬†We tried different kind of outfits (that’s the advantage¬†of shooting at somebody’s home instead of a studio) until we finally started taking photos of Sandra wearing her nightgown, which worked perfectly well for me, as she seems to be¬†a very open, passionate¬†woman. If you want to find out more about Sandra herself, please also visit her own website.¬†I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed shooting!

Sarah Tuleweit III

April 2, 2016

IMG_0199c
Shooting Nr. 3 with opera singer Sarah Tuleweit! This time we went to the Kurhaus Semmering, a great location with awesome furniture, but freezingly cold this February, as there was no heating, water or energy at all.

IMG_0297c

Nevertheless Sarah was brave enough to plan a shoot out there with most of the time sleeveless (but gorgeous!) dresses and still looking beautiful as always! Would you have guessed she is already mother of a sweet little daughter?

We also tried to use the existing light for a special look, which¬†looks much warmer than poor Sarah must have felt that day. ūüėČ

So the white dress was my favorite look that day. Absolutely loved it!

Rita Sereinig and the Volksoper!

October 27, 2015

IMG_0037c
Again and again shooting portraits¬†takes me to places¬†where I’ve never been before! ūüôā
I don’t know why I never watched a¬†musical¬†at the Volksoper so far, although they¬†are being shown there regularly.

IMG_0211b

Well, yesterday¬†I finally went there to take new portraits of Rita Sereinig. Besides singing, dancing and acting she is working as choreographer, director and right now playing in the musical “Der Mann von La Mancha”. If you want to find out more about Rita, please visit her website! I already photographed her about three years ago in my studio and outdoors, this time we met¬†at the Volksoper, yesterday’s shoot location.

IMG_0179sw

As Rita loves my ringlight and asked me to bring it, we used it a lot. ūüôā I always liked the look of it, though¬†some agencies prefer a more natural light source. As you can see, Rita is a very chirpy person and it was a funny shoot. ūüôā Have a look yourself!

Antje Kohler

July 31, 2014

IMG_0029b
On Tuesday I packed all my photo-stuff again Рbut this time my way was only a 25-minutes-cab-ride.

Singer/actress/speaker ANTJE KOHLER had asked me for headshots at her beautiful home. I really love shooting at different locations!  Pictures will always look more different that way, and I like the challenge of finding the best places/backgrounds for portraits in a flat Рnot only pure white for all of the pictures, but still clean enough for what most actors need: Photos for auditions, focused on the person, the face, and not a too vivid, distracting background. Lots of space is helpful most of the time, but sometimes (like in this case) a long corridor which leads into another room is just perfect.

IMG_0090b

Another advantage of shooting at someone’s home is that all of the person’s clothes are available! Antje usually dresses herself rather elegant, so she had beautiful dresses and tops, as she is also working as a singer¬†at weddings, as background-singer ¬†and soloist.

IMG_0115b

But we also tried to find a more casual¬†outfit¬†too, and after a while we did. ūüôā Photos with different stylings/types are important for applications – in general, but especially helpful for actors who need to show with just one picture that they are perfect for the one role they are applying for. So if there’s a variety of photos to choose from, the chance of being¬†invited for an audition might be bigger. And it’s of course always nice to show different types of pictures on an actor’s/singer’s website. ūüôā

Here’s one of my favorite pictures of this portrait-session, I just love the matching colors and the materials! And the cheekbones!

Martin Zauner

August 12, 2013

IMG_7590b
The next day I had the pleasure to take photos of actor Martin Zauner. He is really nice, interesting to talk to, and at the moment you can watch him play in “Cop Stories” every Tuesday on ORF. Martin is also part of the Ensemble in the “Theater in der Josefstadt”.

IMG_7560

Martin wanted to take his portraits at the T√ľrkenschanzpark. Still too hot that day‚Ķ so we walked through this really beautiful park – I admit that I haven’t been there before‚Ķtoo‚Ķ I really¬† should know that town much better!

As green trees / grass is not always the most flattering surroundings for portraits we tried to find some different backgrounds too, which was kind of hard as it wasn’t as shady as I would have loved, but Martin stayed patient and walked regardless of the heat through the park with me, where we also used the floor as photo-background. ūüôā
