Aris Sas

February 13, 2012

At the beginning of November 2011 I have been in Luzern (CH). What a beautiful town! I went there to watch the musical “Hair”. Markus Neugebauer – I already photographed him and his band “freiraum5” – played “Berger”, and Aris Sas was “Claude”, both of them as well as the ensemble did a good job!

Aris  is a remarkably talented actor  and has the most amazing speaking voice I’ve heard until now – as a musical singer he’s very well known anyway as he has been the first “Alfred” in “Tanz der Vampire”. I already “know” Aris since more than 15 years, that’s why I also know how much he does NOT like being photographed (although you’ll find THAT out very quickly ;-)). So I felt very honored (and still do) that I got Aris’ permission and trust to take photos of him. Though the conditions really weren’t the best: First of all I had taken the night-train (because there are always problems with my photo-equipment at the airports…) to Luzern, so I’ve slept about 30 minutes altogether and was really tired. Secondly, Aris got lots of PR for the show to do, besides playing one of the main characters in the evenings, still exhausted from the rehearsals; anyway he had the patience to meet me for pictures between a radio-interview (outside of Luzern) and the show. THEN it started to get dark (thank goodness I had transportable flashlights with me!), AND he had to be in the theatre in time.

So shooting was kind of stressful for me, because I usually take about two hours of time as the model needs some time to get relaxed, especially if he/she doesn’t like being photographed. Then we need to find the best pose, the best light, a good background that fits the model’s hair/colors/clothes/… and the right angle for the person’s face, all this needs time. Either time, or you need to know someone well, be experienced, really lucky and have a photogenic model that trusts the photographer. Although I don’t know very much about Aris – compared to others I’ve photographed, or those I already know about the same amount of time – I really appreciate Aris a lot. I like honesty, earnestness, straightforwardness. Someone who tells me what’s ok and what’s not for him/her. Those are all character traits that – for me- are easy to work with. And I love love love the hair! 🙂
I’m very grateful that through photography I got chances like this, working with such talented people. And I want to take more pictures!!!

This urge to take more and more photos of a person I find truly interesting sometimes is incredible, and actually painful if I don’t get the chance to finish what had just started with taking pictures for, I don’t know – one or two hours? Sometimes this isn’t enough at all, sometimes even two full days are not enough. That doesn’t mean I’m not happy with the result of the first pictures we took. Far from it! Actually I can describe this more as a kind of addiction which can make me very very happy, but is killing me later. Like taking away  a kid’s toy…Nevertheless I can’t help wanting this…stopping photography at all and closing my eyes to all the beauty in the world would be the only solution.

In cases like this one I’d really really love to take more photos, finding out how different someone can look. Sometimes people change a lot during a photoshoot, I don’t know if the person really changes, or if it’s just me who sees the person in a different (most of the time more beautiful) way with getting to know them. Probably it’s a mix of both? I can’t tell afterwards. And I wish I could show people who are really fighting against themselves, how beautiful they are. Unfortunately I can’t do more than showing them my point of view – their own beauty – through my pictures – I think that’s a great thing, but I wish it would be enough.

Aris, thanks again for your time, it was a pleasure,  and I hope everybody else likes the pictures as much as I do. Ok, enough of the talking, here are my favorite photos – enjoy! 🙂

News for 2012 and a winner!

January 1, 2012

First of all: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As I’m always grateful for people who are passing my name on to others who might need photos of themselves, I decided to give away a PORTRAIT-PHOTOSHOOT FOR FREE at the end of 2011! So I asked every customer who told him/her to let ME take his/her photos – and the name I have heard the most will get a free photoshoot! Unfortunately there were more people who brought the same amount of jobs for me this year, so I had to choose one of those. As I know that one of those already sent some of his colleagues to me in 2010, it is PAUL MARESCH who is going to get the free portrait shoot! Congratulations, and of course thanks to everyone who recommended me to his/her colleagues and friends! Please do so in 2012 too!

If you want to know who Paul is, here’s his casting video – as he doesn’t have a website by now, and here’s my favourite photo of the last shoot with him:

As this “competition” was kind of interesting for me too, I decided to give YOU the chance to win a portrait-photoshoot at the end of 2012 again – and no, not only customers can win – everyone who is recommending me has the chance to win the free photoshoot at the end of 2012, so start now! 😉

Though there will be changes in 2012. As you have perhaps already read on my facebook-site I decided to cancel the contract of my studio, this means that there will only be a few studio-shoot-dates available in 2012 – one in January and some at the middle/end of February, so if you want studio portraits, you should book very soon.  From March on only outdoor-shoots will be possible, which actually shouldn’t be a problem because many agencies for actors like natural photos taken outdoors and several actors specifically asked for “only-outdoor-photos” this year.

Examples for those shootings are the photos of Charlotte Krempl, Sebastian Smulders and also some of those pictures in the blogpost before this one – the photos of Pia  Baresch, Lutz Standop, Julia Jelinek, Franziska Hackl, Paul Maresch and Julia Kronenberg were only taken outdoors, we didn’t even go to my studio. If the light and the weather are good for photos I really like to shoot outdoors as it is much more diversified, although I also like studio photography with a controlled environment a lot too. But if you are shooting outdoors you don’t even need a special environment, the only thing you need to have is a starting point – nearly everywhere can be found a great background which is perfect for photos, of course it helps if the photographer or the model knows the surroundings, but very often it’s inspiring to just walk around and find great places while walking around, also good for getting to know your model better. And I’m always glad that actors never mind changing their clothes outdoors! That simplifies shooting a lot when you don’t have to look for a restaurant or café first where my model can change! 🙂

Some asked why I’m canceling my studio contract. The answer is simple – it won’t be profitable any longer, as I’ve decided to go (back) to university in October 2011 to study pharmaceutics. There are several reasons – most of them private – why I made this decision, and I still don’t know if I want to write those reasons down here, I just know that I can’t go on like this forever. I love photography, but sometimes I hate it as much as I love it at the same time – for what it’s doing to me. Sometimes taking photos of someone is like an addiction, I MUST DO IT, even though it might hurt a lot later – and stopping it in a long term view is simply self-protection. Yes, that sounds dramatically – and of course it’s not always like that!!! – but my best friends know how much I’ve struggled for many years whether going on with photography or quitting it. There are more personal reasons, and also the business-part of being self-employed is another thing I don’t like a lot, so in some years I will prefer to work for someone else instead of having to take care of EVERYTHING myself for sure.

But don’t worry, pharmaceutics is a very difficult field of study, so it will take some years – until then I will work as a photographer – at least kind of “part time”, which means shoot dates will depend on my university schedule and exams, and without my own studio, but then I also didn’t have a studio two years ago ;-). I will also try to get some more wedding-photography-jobs, so if you are getting married in 2012 or know someone, here’s my website for wedding photography!

I hope my plans will work out, to go to university AND be a photographer for some more years. Thanks to all my customers of 2011 (please go on recommending me!) – let’s all have a wonderful 2012 with many beautiful pictures, a lot of creativity and of course and most important much fun! 🙂 HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🙂

“Yes, I shoot people for a living” – Shootings 2011 and websites ;-)

December 14, 2011

Sorry, I just HAD to use this old photographer-joke. 😉 And yes, I still think it’s funny. 🙂 And I’m happy nobody got hurt – even if we take dangerous dancing pictures like those with Marcus Richter this year (have a look at the blogpost).

As I don’t have a lot of time right now and there are lots of blogposts I actually planned to write but didn’t because of a lack of time I decided now to write ONE blogpost for all the people I’ve photographed (in 2011) which already have their own website, excluding those shootings that already have their own blogpost. So I’m uploading some photos here, you’ll find the link below that is leading to this person’s website. I already posted some of those links on my facebook-site, so in case you want to be informed what I’m working on currently, just click “like” HERE.

Of course there are many more I’ve photographed this year, but I didn’t find a website then- if you have one though, please send me the link and I’ll post it here!

Sometimes websites are in planning mode right now, so I’m only posting few photos here and the link will follow as soon as those websites are online.

One of those websites will be the one of SARAH SCHERER, I took photos of her yesterday. Beautiful girl, we had fun, and here’s the result:

The week before I photographed MAXI NEUWIRTH (Cast of “Sister Act”)  – as the new photos aren’t on her website right now, I’ll only post my two favorite photos here:

JULIA JELINEK was already photographed by me two times, one of the photos of the last shoot has been published on a full page in “Seitenblicke Magazin”, here’s the link to her website and here are my favorite photos:

Another actress I’ve photographed this year (again) is FRANZISKA HACKL, unfortunately she doesn’t have a website right now, but I like her photos a lot, so I’m posting some here, and post the link to her management here. By the way, she’s a winner of this year’s Nestroypreis (for best young actress…well, I think it was for actors too, so I just write it in German “Bester Nachwuchs” ;-).

MARTIN BERMOSER I’ve also already photographed twice (funny guy!), here’s the link to his website and here are my favorite pictures of this year’s shoot.

Another handsome guy I had the pleasure to photograph this year is MARCEL BRAUNEIS, currently playing “Rusty” in “Starlight Express” in Bochum. Here’s the link to his website, and my favorite photos:

This year I also took photos of vocal coach WOLFGANG WATZKA, here’s the link to his website and one of the photos!

Doris Fuhrmann gave me the chance to photograph another famous actress – MARESA HÖRBIGER. It was such a pleasure, she is really really nice! We took photos at her beautiful house. As she doesn’t have a website, here’s the link to Doris Fuhrmann’s website.

STEFANIE REINSPERGER, another very talented young actress was at my studio for photos too. Here’s the link to her website and my favorite photos:

PATRIZIA STIEGLER is still at school, but I had the pleasure to photograph her again this year! Here’s the link to her website (though I’m not responsible for the additional editing of the photos), and here’s my favorite photo of this years shoot:

NADINE GABRIEL also was here for the second time, when we took photos in 2008 I lived at the 9th district and had a great backyard for taking photos, though time has passed and actors/singers/dancers always need new pictures, so here’s a photo of the most recent shoot, more soon on her own website! (But the front picture is already one of the new photos we took!)

DANIELA MOSER also was here for the second time, she already put the new photos on her own website, so here’s the link – have a look at her new photos there, and here’s my favorite one of this year’s shoot:

At the beginning of this year I took photos of singer MIRJAM NEURURER, here’s the link to her website, and one of my favorite photos!

Thanks to Michael Staringer I had the pleasure to get to know JOHANNA KRÄUTER, a lovely person. Here’s the link to her website and my favorite photos:

BETTINA BOGDANY was already here for photos years ago and it was nice meeting her again! We even got to shoot twice this year – her portraits for her own website, and then again for the PR-photos for “The last 5 years”, I made another blogpost for that shooting.

I also got to know KAROLINE KÖGL this year, here’s the link to her website. We also took some very colorful photos I like a lot, like this one:

I also took photos of DENISE JASTRAUNIG, one of my favorite singers! It’s always fun to shoot her, I think we really got some nice shots for her website (and mine too 😉 ), have a look:

Another dancer I photographed this year is SUSANNE BRANDSTETTER. I really do love taking dancing photos. Susanne also has her own website, so have a look there, but here’s one of the photos I like a lot:

I also got to know LUTZ STANDOP this year, here’s the link to his website and two really different photos! ;-):

Sometimes I really like outdoor-shootings, like the one of JULIA KRONENBERG (or also the one with Charlotte Krempl, here’s the link to the blogpost I made), it was lots of fun to walk around with her and one of her friends. Naschmarkt (and surroundings) was a great location, so we got some really nice shots. Please go to her website and look at more photos, here are some of my favorites:

Another very pretty actress I had the pleasure to meet and photograph this year is PIA BARESCH. Though it was kind of stressful because I had to be back at university in time, Pia was very kind and we got some really nice pictures. We took photos at Stadtpark and in her beautiful flat. Oh yes, and of course at the basement garage!! That’s actually my favorite picture! 🙂 Look at more photos at her own website.

PAUL MARESCH is another actor I’ve photographed this year for the second time. Actually a good thing many of my models come back to me for photos! Thanks to all of them! This also helps the photos, if I already have taken photos of someone before. Unfortunately Paul doesn’t have a website until now, but I found a very nice casting-video on youtube, so if you are interested, have a look here.

Nina Weiß

November 29, 2011

This month I had the pleasure to take photos of two singers/dancers/actors I already “know” since a very long time and already photographed a reeeeaaaally long time ago. One of those two is Nina Weiß, she has played in many shows of the “Vereinigte Bühnen Wien”, she’s a phantastic dancer – one of my favorite female dancers, it’s such a pleasure to see her on stage, having fun! – and finally gets the chance to sing and play main characters too (long time since being second cast “narrator” in “Joseph…” at the Raimundtheater), like “Eponine” in “Les Misérables” in Baden this summer, playing very successful at “Singing in the rain” and soon will be the main character in “Sweet charity” in Baden (Stadttheater Baden), Premiere is on January 14th next year. It’s so good to see Nina can finally show that she’s a good singer too, although it’s always a loss if someone like her is missing in the dancing ensemble of course. But she told me that her role in “Sweet charity” is very multitasking, she will have to sing and also have to dance a lot. So I’m curious already and will definitely going to watch the show, also because my favorite musical director, Werner Sobotka, is going to direct it. Ooops… wrong information, sorry about that, it’s not directed by Werner but by  Ricarda R. Ludigkeit.

We took photos already in 2002? 2003? Well, a long time ago. 🙂 Though they are still ok I think, but of course I’m happy we took some new ones, as I really like Nina, and it’s always nice meeting her. Nina is such a nice, open, friendly and positive girl. If you are “twilight”-fan (if not, read the books!) – she reminds me of Alice Cullen. 😉 Ok, without the foresight, but with talent for singing and dancing. 🙂

Nina needed new head-shots and brought different tops, we also took photos with other shirts, but the blue pullover was absolutely the best, looked perfect with Nina’s blue eyes! So, here are the pictures, have a look.

Want to do something GOOD for Christmas?

October 19, 2011

If you want to do something good for Christmas, start NOW! Here are two projects I’d like to support.

First one is a project of wonderful artist Steffen Teuscher, a florist – he and his wife Diana are friends of mine, we got to know each other when Steffen hired me for taking photos of his class and the masterpieces for the florist’s examination for the master craftsman’s certificate in Zwettl. I made the classes website, took their portraits and photographed their artworks. Later then I built Steffen’s and Diana’s own website (http://www.natur-form-gestalter.de/) and right now I’m doing the graphic work for their new project: FLOWERS IN CONCERT – music in combination with flower art, and the money goes to Japan, as Steffen has worked there shortly before the catastrophe happened.

Just have a look at their blog: http://flowersinconcert.blogspot.com/ – there you can find all the information about the project, and if you want to buy a ticket for the concert, please do so and help them getting money for Japan!

And there’s a second project I want to support too. As many of you know, the two musical singers Marjan Shaki and Lukas Perman are both very committed to an organization that helps people in Haiti – “Power of hope”. Now they’ve had a very cute idea to help the kids in Haiti!

So if you have some time left and a lot of love for others who are not as lucky as we are, take your chance and make a child happy with a Christmas box!  I think this is a great idea and I will definitely support them, first of all with posting their idea here, my box will be following soon. 😉

The idea is packing a shoebox (30x20x10 cm) with all kind of stuff a kid needs – pencils, writing pads, soap, toothpaste, t-shirts (!!), flip-flops, small toys like yo-yo, mikado,…and, very important, a letter or postcard with some nice words or a prayer.

You can bring your box (please decorate it nicely with stickers,… but DON’T wrap it because customs is going to have a look what’s inside, and only put NEW things in there, no used stuff please…) to the RAIMUNDTHEATER or RONACHER, if you want to participate! Your box(es) must be there until Nov. 10th, as the container is going to take some weeks to Haiti!

“Mary Patrick” Yvonne Köstler, “Sister Act” Hamburg

September 9, 2011

As the “Sister Act”-premiere in Vienna will be on Sep. 15th, I thought I’d post some photos I took this year in the TUI Operettenhaus in Hamburg.

In May I have been in Hamburg, and as I already know Yvonne Köstler, who is 2nd Cast “Mary Patrick” in the musical “Sister Act”, since some years, we decided to take some photos at the theatre! It was great, Yvonne is a very funny person, so of course she’s perfect for “Mary Patrick” and did a great job when I was watching the show in the evening! Yvonne asked if we could use her costumes and take photos in the theatre, we got permission to do so.

What surprised me most was the weight of the costumes! Wow, they are REALLY heavy because of the many layers and all the glittering stuff (lots of sequins). It must be very warm and exhausting to wear these costumes! And the nuns all have different pajamas, very cute. 🙂

I also tried a long-exposure-thing – Yvonne was twirling around (or moved her arms that looked like wings sometimes, or both) while the shutter was open, the flash was fired once and that’s how we got a sharp picture with some motion blur:

Thanks again to Stage entertainment/TUI Operettenhaus and of course thanks Yvonne, I had lots of fun with you! 🙂

Here’s also the link to the official website for “Sister Act” in Hamburt, and here’s the link to Yvonne’s own website!

And now enjoy the slideshow!

Sister Act, Vienna (VBW) – press preview

September 4, 2011

Press preview for the musical “Sister Act” at the Ronacher! The cast played four scenes/songs of the show:

“Fabelhaft, Baby”, “Ich mach sie kalt”, “Singt hinauf zum Himmel”, “Sonntagmorgenfieber”. There was already a cast-change: Brigitte Neumeister was replaced by Dagmar Hellberg, she is playing “Mutter Oberin” now – I really like Dagmar Hellberg, when I first heard her singing on the “Freudiana”-CD and later then during my diploma project at the “Jekyll & Hyde”-rehearsals. Great voice, though she hasn’t much to sing in this show… 😦

I’m sure Ana Milva Gomes will be a phantastic “Dolores”, what a wonderful voice!! Drew Sarich is well known here anyway, so I guess I don’t have to say a lot about his performance yesterday! Though I saw movements and faces I haven’t seen in combination with Drew before. 🙂 Very funny, I’m sure he will be a gangster you just have to like! His new beard he got for the show is, well, funny but looks surprisingly good, I have to admit. 🙂 I don’t know why, but I like it. 🙂

Kathy Tanner as “Mary Lazarus” will be very amusing to watch too, Barbara Obermeier is playing “Mary Roberts”, Sonja Atlas “Mary Patrick” , Martin Berger “Joey”, Arcangelo Vigneri “Erkan”, Bernhard Viktorin “TJ”, Michael Schönborn “Monsignore O’Hara”, and Thada Suanduanchai “Eddie Fritzinger” – what a name! 🙂 Poor guy will be misspelled very often, I guess, but he seems to be a very cute Eddie, assuming from taking photos after the show at the foyer.

The stage design and light is AMAZING, a pleasure to look at. Beautiful colors, wonderful light effects. I already watched the show in Hamburg this year (another blogpost with a “behind the scenes”-shooting with Hamburg’s 2nd cast of “Mary Patrick”, Yvonne Köstler will follow soon), and the stage and the costumes were really impressive, I think it’s the same here.

After the scenes were shown, we got the chance to take group photos with the actors or while they were being interviewed. I’m very happy Drew was so nice to come with me and let me take some photos near the window where the light and the background was better. Have a look at the photos of “Drew and the Lolly” below in the slideshow. 🙂

Premiere will be on September 15th, Ronacher, Seilerstätte 9, 1010 Wien, here’s also the link to the official website of the VBW where you can buy tickets and get some information about the show.

And here’s the link to the press conference of “Sister Act” with Whoopi Goldberg!

Martin Bruny is also going to write about “Sister Act” at kultur-channel, go there too!
